| Liposuction has consistently
been the most popular cosmetic
surgical procedure in the world for
the past several years. It is a safe
and effective method to reduce the
overall number of fat cells, and
produce a better contour to your
body. |
 |
We can remove unsightly bulges from
almost any area to produce a slimmer and
improved shape. Most body areas can be
suctioned for better contour and reduced
volume, from the face down to the ankles.
The most popular areas for women are the
abdomen, inner thighs, outer thighs, hips,
flanks and knees. The most common areas for
men are the abdomen, love handles or flanks
and chest wall. Liposuction can even be used
to reduce heavy breasts in some women. We
evaluate your body in distinct units, such
as the upper abdomen, lower abdomen, flanks
and knees and prioritize the areas that
would benefit most from recontouring.

The
Best Candidates for Liposuction
You should be physically healthy,
psychologically stable and realistic in your
expectations. Your age is not a major
consideration; however, older patients may
have diminished skin elasticity and may not
achieve the same results as a younger
patient with tighter skin.
Planning the Surgery
In your initial consultation, be frank in
discussing your expectations with Dr.
Watkins. Dr. Watkins will give you
specific instructions on how to prepare for
surgery, including guidelines on eating and
drinking, smoking, and taking or avoiding
vitamins, iron tablets and certain
medications. Also, while you are
making preparations, be sure to arrange for
someone to drive you home after the
procedure and, if needed, to help you at
home for a day or two.
Where Your Surgery Will Be Performed
Your facelift will be performed in our
surgeon's office-based outpatient surgical
facility. An Anesthesiologist will be
present to monitor you throughout surgery
with all the state-of-the-art equipment
necessary for your procedure.
Types of Anesthesia
If only a small amount of fat and a
limited number of body sites are involved,
liposuction can be performed under local
anesthesia, which numbs only the affected
areas. However, if you prefer, the local is
usually used along with intravenous sedation
to keep you more relaxed during the
procedure.
The
Surgery
The time required to perform liposuction
may vary considerably, depending on the size
of the area, the amount of fat being
removed, the type of anesthesia and the
technique used. Liposuction is a
procedure in which localized deposits of fat
are removed to recontour one or more areas
of the body. Through a tiny incision, a
narrow tube or cannula is inserted and used
to vacuum the fat layer that lies deep
beneath the skin. The suction action is
provided by a vacuum pump or a large
syringe, depending on the surgeon's
preference.
Getting Back to Normal
Your surgeon will probably tell you to
start walking around as soon as possible to
reduce swelling and to help prevent blood
clots from forming in your legs. You will
begin to feel better after about a week or
two and you should be back at work within a
few days following your surgery.
Activity that is more strenuous should be
avoided for about a month as your body
continues to heal. Your surgeon will
schedule follow-up visits to monitor your
progress.
Your
New Look
You will see a noticeable difference in
the shape of your body quite soon after
surgery. You may find that you are more
comfortable in a wide variety of clothes and
more at ease with your body. And, by eating
a healthy diet and getting regular exercise,
you can help to maintain your new shape.

Fat is a very common material used as a
filling substance in facial rejuvenation.
The fat that we inject into facial areas
comes from your own body, so there is no
chance of an allergic reaction. Fat can be
used in higher volumes than most other
injectable materials and can be used to
create a fuller, more youthful appearance by
reestablishing pleasing contours. Injections
of fat into the deep layers of facial tissue
can soften the angular, thin appearance that
often accompanies aging. The procedure is a
two-step process that usually requires
several treatments. The fat must be
harvested from your own body, typically from
the abdomen, thighs or hips. After it is
extracted, it is placed in a centrifuge to
separate the fat from surrounding tissues.
The fat is then packed into a syringe ready
to be injected.
Fat injections have a very variable life
span. Much of the fat may be absorbed within
six months. The fat is slowly absorbed by
the body, although the amount of absorption
depends on many factors and is hard to
predict. Typically, more than half of the
fat used in injectable treatments is
absorbed within six months of the procedure,
although it may last longer. Almost all
patients will permanently retain some of the
injected fat. Follow up treatments are
usually necessary.
